Sewing: A Grandmother’s Legacy
My mother was born in Brooklyn, NY to Fred & Julia Kufer, immigrants from Germany. Unfortunately Julia passed away when my mother was 17 years old, but her legacy survives. Julia was a seamstress and purchased my mother a Singer sewing machine. By then they had had moved to Mohegan Lake, NY.

I “rescued” my mother’s sewing machine in 2022. She moved to Florida and the machine came with her, complete with the cabinet. I couldn’t find a way to ship it home, so I brought my car to FL, taking the Amtrak Auto Train from VA. The cabinet was damaged and worthless, so it was removed. We used to watch my mother sew really fast on her Singer sewing machine, making us clothes, curtains, and mending. It is still FAST.
